I Tried Reaching Out

Oil on Cradled Panel

8" x 10"

2021

This painting is part of a recent series of work that feature boxes or containers of space. I was interested in the psychological relationship between interior and exterior space combined with objects found from my surrounds. What I enjoyed most about this series was the potential for narratives and associations to build naturally through the process of making. Working en plein air more consistently has enhanced my attention to the invented environments surrounding subjects in my studio work. For a long time this image was just of the red box in the landscape. The inflated glove was a serendipitous decision that I really liked. There's something interesting about an objects that expands and contracts while holding the shape of something so personal. I also liked the emotional ideas of an object that will one day deflate entirely placed up high on a pedestal of sorts. Beyond that I see the painting as a very simple and soft painting.

Framed in an artist made cherry float frame with walnut splines. Ships ready to hang with a signed Certificate of Authenticity. The painting ships wrapped with plastic in a cardboard box.
