Portrait of A Maple was made en plein air during the 2023 invitational Bath County Plein Air Festival hosted by Warm Springs Gallery in Virginia. This was my first time participating in the event. I was provided with a very welcoming and generous host couple who lived in the mountains. During the week I mostly painted around Warm Springs and Hot Springs in Bath County, but this painting was made in the woods along the mile long driveway of my hosts property.
I quickly fell in love with the lucious forest green landscape surrounding this young maple tree that I painted. I spent two days creating this painting under overcast light giving the trees a magical quality that I wanted to capture. The shapes of the maple tree kept my attention throughout the process, but the longer I looked the more I was drawn to the subtle temperature shifts of color in and around the tree.
This painting along with my body of work during the exhibition was awarded the "Best New Artist" award by the event judge and late artist Randy Sexton. I'm honored to have been invited during the 10th anniversary of the event and to have my work recognized from a very well respected and deeply missed artist/plein air painter.
Portrait of A Maple ships with a free copy of my 2023 Volume 3 Plein Air Zine a self published book that holds a year of my plein air practice. This is my favorite of the three zines that I've self published. Since the zine features the image of this painting the collector should definitely have a copy to go with their new painting!
